Philosophy & Mission

Mission Statement - Attorney Eric A. Jones

My Desire for today is to create a truly international Law practice.

My hope is to hire ethnically diverse attorneys and paralegals working under the same roof, so that clients may come through the doors of this office speaking their natural language and fell truly welcomed and accepted when they enter those doors. In the United States, a lot is said about cultural diversity and acceptacne, but it seems to me that most of the time it is simply talk and not truly felt on a heart level.

I want to be used to create a safe haven for people to come to address their legal needs, Where they are truly accepted: valued and appreciated for who they are culturally and as individuals.

The Origin of Our Firm’s Name

Our firm’s name is from the story told in the Gospel of Luke 24:13-35, which provides the philosophy of our practice, especially in the areas of family law, bankruptcy and immigration matters.

Luke tells the story of the first Easter afternoon when it is reported that Christ appeared to two disciples who were walking together along the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus. At the time of the reported appearance these two disciples' sadness and hopelessness prevented them from seeing all that they had been taught by the man they called Prophet and whom they believed was their answered hope.

They were blinded by a preoccupation with their own immediate difficulties. Similarly, many of our clients have come to this office blinded and overwhelmed by what they have perceived to be unrealized expectations (e.g. forever lasting relationships, financial prosperity/security, and feeling welcomed in a new country). Fortunately it has been my experience more times than not that what we believe to be lost is often times more illusory than reality. Life’s emotional events have a redemptive purpose when viewed in light of the big picture versus the microcosm of any given moment or season.

In the story told in Luke, "Christ "came near and walked with the two disciples, eventually opening the disciples' eyes to his presence and lighting the fire of all that was feared lost but know restored, in their hearts. As they walked to Emmaus on the outskirts of Jerusalem, he explained to them the meaning of all the scriptures concerning Himself. When they arrived in Emmaus, He "took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them," and their eyes were opened. They recognized Him as Christ (the thing they hoped in), and they remembered how their hearts had burned within them as they talked with Him on the road. After the disciples understood the truth about the events they perceived as unfair, unjust and hopeless, Christ’s purpose for being with them on that day was over and He disappeared.

Similarly, we at Emmaus aim to open your eyes and make your hearts burn with passion and life again by attempting to reveal a less negative perspective of the events that have befallen upon you. We at Emmaus understand there is always more than one way of looking at any particular situation. Events that befall us are not always what they appear to be. Our aim is to reveal that truth when applicable, for we also understand sometimes all of us need a guide to help us see clearly.

At Emmaus we understand that as our client you entrust us with your despair and pain, dreams and promise. That is why at Emmaus we provide you with our knowledge and experience, geared towards shining a positive light on your tomorrow. We pride ourselves at Emmaus on helping you open your eyes to numerous possibilities. You are empowered and encouraged to overcome any obstacle; face any challenge if you but only listen and believe. When you walk through the door of Emmaus you can trust that together we will embark on our new journey with enthusiasm unleashed by the awesome power of hope.
